The Festival of Britain was a five-month-long nationwide series of events, but everyone remembers the forward-looking South Bank exhibition in London ? the Skylon, the Dome of Discovery, the brightly coloured pavilions. To add to the fun there was the Battersea Pleasure Gardens. After the austerity of the Second World War, this was a look to the future, a celebration of Britain, its people and the designs for a brave new world ? ?a tonic to the nation?.  If you were around then, bring along any Festival of Britain memorabilia you may have.

The first magic lanterns were made in the 1650s, some two hundred years before the invention of photography. This talk illustrates the development of the lantern, using original equipment and gives an insight into family entertainment in the nineteenth century.
